Patriot Elementary Poms Team Takes First in Dance Competition
The Patriot Elementary Pom Team placed first in their division (Novice 8 & Under Large Groups) in a recent Revolution Talent Competition hosted at the Roy J. Wasson Academic Complex. The group of students range in age from second to fifth grade.
The Patriot Poms group is in its second year of existence thanks to second grade Coaches/ Sponsors Ms. Sydney Groves and Mrs. Rachel Schindler. Both of these enthusiastic teachers at Patriot have backgrounds in both cheer and dance and have shared their passion for these movement arts with Patriot students. The school-based team has a strong student reception with between 30 and 50 interested students attending the two most recent tryouts.
The 13-student Patriot Poms team has caught the attention of local competitive dance groups, with opponent parents even asking the Patriot staff what studio these girls come from. This is a compliment to this elementary school team comprised of members from Fort Carson based families, where they do not have the benefit of years of experience together, due to military movement and ever-changing student populations. The Patriot Poms team also practices twice weekly in the school gym, not a dance studio like most other competitors, with an occasional day added in to fine-tune skills.
Ms. Groves hails from California, where she had extensive experience in cheer, while her counterpart Mrs. Schindler is a Denver native with experience in dance, specifically ballet. These two teacher-coaches have tapped into the high interest and energy of the Patriot students to create a fantastic team with a lot of participation.
The group has undertaken fundraising to support their thirst to compete and cover the costs (approximately $50 per participant) for registration for events like the recent competition. They have hosted open Pom Camps for other students in the area as one of their fundraising efforts. By taking on fundraising projects, they have been able to set up a budget that enables all team members to be involved without adding any undue financial stress on parents. Coach Groves was justifiably proud of the girls and their efforts to represent FFC8 and Patriot Elementary at the latest competition and looks forward to many more in the future!
