Mrs. Jessica Wykstra

Welcome back, Trojans!

This is my nineteenth year here at district eight.  I completed my undergraduate work at the University of Colorado at Boulder, earning a BA in psychology.  I then went on to complete my MA in education at the University of Colorado at Denver, where I obtained an elementary teaching license and endorsements in secondary history and K-12 physical education.  I spent thirteen years teaching history at FMS, and three years teaching PE at Eagleside Elementary, before returning to FMS to teach PE.  My wonderful husband also teaches at FMS. We have two incredible children, Oakley and Skyley; and our silly Great Dane, Daisy.

In addition to being a PE teacher, I am a personal fitness trainer, and I am a third degree black belt and certified instructor in Ho Am Taekwondo.  I love the strength and artistry of traditional forms, the fun and competition of sparring, and the general awesomeness of board-breaking and knowing how to defend myself if necessary.  Taekwondo is also a fantastic family sport, and both my children train with me.  This past year I also began training in Krav Maga.  My favorite hobbies are reading, traveling, playing my guitar, and just about anything you can do outside.  I love to hike, run, bike, swim, ski, surf, and go four wheeling in my yellow Jeep.

I believe in being a fit, healthy and active life-long learner.  And that is what I teach my students.  It is just as important to be passionate about studies in language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, as it is to understand and appreciate an active lifestyle in order to maintain good health and longevity.  In fact, current brain research indicates that there is a strong correlation between physical activity and learning capacity.   I teach my students to be passionate about intentionally making healthy life choices.  And along the way, I'll show them just how fun physical activity can be in order to lay the foundation for them to maintain an active lifestyle throughout their lives.

We're going to have a great year, and I can't wait to see you in the gym!
