Team High Flyers: The First All-girl Drone Team at FFCHS

The Trojan Robotics Program at Fountain Fort Carson High School is flying to new heights with its very first all-girl Drone Team. Students Olivia, Joy, and Kacie form the dynamic trio known as Team High Flyers. 

The team began after Mr. Knight, the Robotics and Drone Teacher, noticed a keen interest among some of the girls on his robotics team.

“I’d never flown a drone a day in my life and it was a very cool thing to do. And something I wanted to try at least. I really like being able to program a drone compared to a robot you have to build,” said Junior Kacie. 

 Senior Olivia says being on the drone team has opened up a lot of opportunities for her.

“It gave me a chance to hone in my leadership abilities and get to connect with people who have a similar hobby to mine."

These teens are proving that the sky is not the limit with a phenomenal first season. so far they've won three awards in three competitions: The Excellence, Flight Operator, and Judges Award. 

“Competitions always make me excited because I look forward to really putting our practice and skills to the test and see how we kind of rank up compared to the other schools that have been working very hard," said Junior Joy. "I overall just love the competition. I feel like I get a lot of team building skills out of it and a lot of thinking skills out of it."

Reflecting on their journey, Mr. Knight shares his excitement for the team's achievements, especially their first competition win.

"Well, that first competition, I was just excited for them because this was something that they really wanted to do. So for them to win on their very first competition, that just made it even sweeter." 

The team ranked 5th in Colorado and 73rd in the World after a competition at the Widefield Rec. Center on December 9th.
