Sharpen Math Skills
Find creative ways to incorporate math skills into daily activities.
- Cooking and Baking: Involve your child in the kitchen and encourage them to measure ingredients, double or halve recipes, or calculate cooking times based on the recipe.
- Grocery Shopping: Turn it into a math challenge. Have your child compare prices, calculate discounts or savings, and practice adding up the prices of items in the cart.
- Board Games and Puzzles: Many involve strategic thinking and mathematical concepts.
Get Back into a Routine
A few weeks before school begins get your child back on their normal sleep schedule and back to a morning and bedtime routine.
Discuss Transportation Plans
- If your child takes the bus or walks to school, review the transportation plans with them.
- Talk about safety rules, including looking both ways before crossing the street, waiting for the bus, and knowing emergency contact information.
Preparing for Kindergarten
- Practice holding a pencil
- Writing their name
- Counting
- Letter names and sounds
- Practice zipping jackets and fastening buttons/ snaps
For Younger Kids
- Have your child practice tying shoes/ velcro shoes
- Have your child practice opening lunch and snack packaging/ containers.
