BRETT JOHNSON NAMED
ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR!
Fountain-Fort Carson School District Eight is honored to announce that Brett Johnson has been named “Administrator of the Year” by the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented. Brett has served as the Assistant Principal at Fountain-Fort Carson High School since 2002. In 2007, he actively participated on the district’s GT Task Force which began developing the district gifted program. In 2008, Mr. Johnson took on the formidable task of creating the first-ever FFCHS Gifted Program. He began implementing GT lunch groups that have become very popular and are well attended by the gifted high school students. Brett plans semester field trips for identified students. These students have taken part in various extension activities, such as visiting college campuses, attending a national debate and participating in a physics day at Elitch Gardens. Mr. Johnson also realized the importance of supporting the affective needs of identified gifted students. He sought out several teacher leaders who were willing to mentor gifted students on their own time and selected staff members who continue to serve as case managers for gifted students. These teachers support in the development of Advanced Learning Plan goals, plan monthly check-in meetings, and attend many of the students’ high school events. Parents also partner in the High School’s gifted program; Brett holds evening dinners for parents and students during which they can review the programming and services students are receiving, as well as receive information about the college planning process.
Mr. Johnson has developed a gifted program at Fountain-Fort Carson that is an example of strong advocacy of gifted students, belief in providing research-based programming practices and a value for supporting both parents and teachers in learning more about the unique needs of this exceptional population. We congratulate Brett on this award!

Construction of the
New Preschool has Begun!
The Fountain-Fort Carson School Board approved the contract to build a preschool on Jimmy Camp Road adjacent to the Administration Building. The school will house all of the District Eight preschool programs in Fountain. A similar project was constructed several years ago on Fort Carson.
The town preschool programs are being consolidated into one facility to better meet the needs of our preschool students. This will also free up space in our elementary schools and accommodate for growth until another elementary school is needed. The new preschool will have twelve classrooms and is master planned for eight additional classrooms.
The District is growing and representatives from the District continue to work closely with the City of Fountain, Fort Carson and developers to prepare for growth. This will be very challenging over the next five to ten years because the needs will far exceed the available resources. Elementary school boundary changes may also be necessary in the near future. The preschool is scheduled to open in August 2015.
