Soldier Volunteer Program
is a Win-Win for Participants
 By Mike Mauirro
From volunteer face painters at Weikel Elementary just before the holidays, to the Carson Middle School math tutors every Thursday afternoon, young soldier volunteers are providing valuable services to our students and staff.

Carson Middle School 8th grade math teacher John Chartier utilizes several of these young soldier volunteers from the 52nd Engineering Battalion for his Thursday after-school math tutoring program.  Heyong Kim and Josh Jackson, both about two years into their service commitment, have shared aspirations to one day teach.  Heyong has an interest in English while Josh is still considering his options.

Both were quick to praise Sgt. Harris and Lt. Cody for steering them into this opportunity at Carson Middle School.  Heyong, who hails from the Baltimore, Maryland area, and Josh, from Lawrence, Kansas, the breadbasket of America, are kindred brothers in more than just their military careers. They share an interest in working with young people and were strong advocates of the programs available to our military personnel that encourage them to seek out education and training beyond their military skill set.  They talked about the Tuition Assistance (TA) Program and the GI Bill as great opportunities to enrich their own educational experiences, much like they enrich the students they work with in the tutoring program.  They both agreed that this is a foot in the door toward fulfilling their ultimate goals to become teachers and provide real life experiences with students.

Mr. Chartier, the supervising teacher, believes their work is valued for many reasons. He regularly observes their consistency and willingness to reach out to help others.  Mr. Chartier further praises their efforts with his math students by explaining that these soldiers are much closer in age to the students they work with, and students can often relate to them differently than their teachers and even their parents, who are often military and a generation removed.   Mr. Chartier certainly understands where these young soldiers are coming from, given that he is a retired Army Ranger himself, and understands the military aspect of their role in today’s armed forces. He is also a teacher that recognizes the challenges of teaching in a military community school system.  After interviewing these young soldiers and Mr. Chartier, it is evident that this truly is a win-win for everyone involved. Students get more one-on-one attention under the supervision of a former soldier and now experienced teacher, and the soldiers get an opportunity to learn from a great mentor while providing valuable services to young lives during Carson Middle School's after-school enrichment program.

April is the Month of the
Military Child!

Across the nation, during the week of April 14-18, most states and communities will be taking a day to
Purple Up! For Military Kids.”

People are being encouraged to wear purple on one of those dates to show support for our military kids and to thank them for their strength and sacrifices.  Please check for events in your area for the appropriate day to “Purple Up!” and
